Let's use Windows 7 + Oracle Virtualbox + Linux or Solaris running as a virtual machine under Windows using seamless mode for the virtual OS. Very easy to setup using the Virtualbox setup wizard. Use all available processor threads because the setup wizard will default to one single processor thread. Also make as much memory available to the Virtual Machine based on the number of machine processes available, divided by the number of virtual machines + the host machine. For example, a desktop or notebook running a typical dual core processor would be assigned two processors in the virtual machine settings. If hyper-threads are available you can assign these as processor threads as well meaning your virtual machine would have four processors assigned to it. A Windows host with 4Gb memory running one virtual machine should have at least 2Gb memory assigned to the VM for maximum performance overall. These are basic guidelines and as also should be adjusted as required.
