  • Supermicro Raises Quarterly Revenue Outlook Sharply as AI Server Demand Surges

Super Micro Computer gave the AI hardware trade its clearest demand signal in weeks on Tuesday, October 20, saying preliminary revenue for its first quarter of fiscal 2027 will come in far above the guidance it had given investors only weeks earlier.

The San Jose server maker, known as Supermicro, estimates revenue for the quarter ended September 30, 2026 at 18.5 billion to 19.5 billion dollars, compared with prior guidance of 14.5 billion to 15.5 billion dollars. At the midpoints, that is a raise of about 4 billion dollars, or roughly 27 percent, and well above the analyst consensus of about 14.9 billion dollars reported ahead of the update. The company attributed the upside primarily to increased demand for AI platforms.

Margins moved in the same direction. Supermicro estimates gross margin for the quarter at 12.0 to 12.5 percent, compared with guidance of 10.4 to 10.8 percent, and said the improvement was primarily due to customer and product mix. That combination matters for server builders, whose AI systems can generate very large revenue while leaving comparatively thin margins. Here, the company is indicating that the extra volume arrived with a more favorable mix, not just more boxes shipped at any price.

Supermicro was careful to label the numbers as early. The figures are unaudited, based on preliminary results and management estimates, and subject to revision as the company completes its financial closing procedures. Its independent accounting firm has not audited or reviewed the preliminary revenue and margin figures, and the company warned that actual results may differ materially. The full first-quarter report is scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, 2026, when Supermicro will hold a conference call at 5:00 p.m. ET to review the results in detail.

Investors treated the update as evidence that AI infrastructure spending remains resilient after a bruising stretch for the sector. Reuters reported that concerns over the profitability of the AI buildout had triggered a selloff in AI-linked stocks last week, with data center operator CoreWeave at the center of the storm, and that the Philadelphia semiconductor index had marked eight consecutive sessions of declines, its longest losing streak in 18 years. Against that backdrop, a server maker raising its own outlook by more than a quarter stood out.

The market reaction on Wednesday, October 21 was broad. Supermicro shares closed at 35.57 dollars, up 9.55 percent, on volume of 80.2 million shares, about 76 percent above its three-month average. Peers moved with it: Dell Technologies closed up 5.30 percent and Hewlett Packard Enterprise up 3.73 percent, as buying spread across AI server and data center infrastructure names. Chipmakers rose in premarket trading as well, with Nvidia, Intel and AMD all gaining, according to Reuters.

For enterprise and cloud buyers, the read-through is practical rather than financial. Demand strong enough to pull a quarter this far above plan suggests hyperscalers and large enterprises are still ordering AI platforms at pace, and that lead times and allocation for high-end server systems are unlikely to ease quickly. It also puts the November 3 report under a brighter spotlight: investors and customers alike will be looking for detail on backlog, product mix and whether the stronger margins can hold as volumes keep rising.
